A brief look into the life and work of Shri. S.Suri,
VU2MY, Founder & Chairman (Emeritus), National Institute of Amateur Radio, Hyderabad

Shri. Sriramamurthy Suri popularly known as 'S.Suri' was born on 27th October 1941 in Vuyyuru, Krishna District of Andhra Pradesh. In his 77 years of service, he served the country in various capacities as a leader of Political, Social, Cultural and Scientific Organisations and still continues to serve as Chairman (Emeritus) of National Institute of Amateur Radio, an N.G.O founded by him. He is fellow of A.P. Academy of Sciences, Associate-IETE and Advanced Grade-ASOL. Shri. S.Suri started his career at a very early age, when he was selected to Indian Air Force in 1960.
He served in 1962 Indo-China war, 1965 Indo-Pakistan war and was in active service for 9 years. Shri. Suri later worked in the Quality Control department of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, Hyderabad. He went on to become the President of the Trade Union, HAL and simultaneously worked for its Ex-servicemen Association, Telugu Kala Samithi and founded HAL Amateur Radio Club along with Shri. N.G.Nanda, VU2NG (son of former Prime Minister Shri. G.L.Nanda) who was Chief of Design Engineering at HAL.
Shri. Suri got his Amateur (HAM) Radio license (callsign VU2MY) from Government of India in 1965. His passion for Amateur Radio grew by the day and started Andhra Pradesh Amateur Radio society to promote the activity in 1975. In 1983, he established National Institute of Amateur Radio with the initiative and support of Late Shri. Rajiv Gandhi, VU2RG.
His work in development of amateur radio two-way communications as a Ham (Amateur Radio) operator and his work to empower youth with skills for serving the country by establishing communication links during emergencies have won him and NIAR World-Wide appreciation. Under his leadership the NIAR as an N.G.O. has celebrated its 35th year in service of the nation in 2018. Awards, Appreciations and Mementos were received by NIAR under his leadership for various activities from National and International agencies, which include “Amateur of the Year 2012” at Dayton Hamvention USA, “Rajiv Gandhi Visionary Award 2015” , “Golden Antenna Award” given by German-Dutch Association, “Doyen of Indian Hams” and several others. His activities through the institute are extensively reported in electronic and print media in India and abroad. The Readers' Digest honored him with a 7 page article in September' 1992 issue.
Mr. Suri was also invited to address amateur radio forums in European Parliament and was guest speaker in many international amateur radio forums in USA, Europe and Far East including Japan. Even at his present age, he is able to inspire the next generation to commit themselves and work the development of Nation. A book on his life and work was released on his Shastipurti celebrations (61st Birthday) through the hands of Dr. Shrikant Jichkar, VU2SJA, ex-MP in 2004.
